Dubai dentists: the implant quote you sent on WhatsApp and the patient who never came
TL;DR
Dubai dental clinics lose patients at two points: the first WhatsApp message (a price or 'do you have anything today?' answered hours later) and the day of the appointment (no reminder, no deposit, so the chair sits empty). Studies from the Gulf put forgetting at the top of the reasons for missed dental visits, and a Cochrane review found text reminders lift attendance from 67.8% to 78.6%. Instant multilingual replies, real slots, a deposit for long procedures and automatic reminders close both gaps.
A toothache at 7am and a veneer quote at midnight
Two messages reach a dental clinic in Al Barsha on the same day. At 07:10 a father writes that his daughter has had a toothache all night: can someone see her this morning? At 23:30 a woman in Kuwait City asks for the price of eight veneers and whether it can be done in one trip of five days.
The clinic opens at 9. By then the father has taken his daughter to the clinic next to her school, which answered at 07:12, and that family of five now has a new dentist. The veneer enquiry gets a careful reply at 10:40, with a price range and a request for photos. The patient had the same answer from a clinic in Jumeirah eleven hours earlier and has already sent them her X-rays.
One was a AED 400 emergency, the other a five-figure treatment plan. Both were lost in the gap between when patients write and when the front desk reads.
What the data says about dental patients in Dubai
Dentistry is the single biggest draw for health tourists in Dubai. The Dubai Health Authority reported more than 691,000 health tourists in 2023, up from 674,000 in 2022, spending over AED 1.03 billion. Dentistry accounted for 29% of them, ahead of dermatology and gynaecology. Of those dental tourists, 48% came from Arab and GCC countries, 20% from Europe and 19% from Asia.
Then there is the resident market: Dubai's population reached 3.86 million at the end of 2024, in a city with more than 4,600 licensed health facilities competing for them. A patient in JVC has a dozen dental clinics within ten minutes and will message three.
Missed appointments are the second leak, and Gulf studies show how common they are. In a survey of patients at Saudi military hospitals published in Cureus, 58.1% said they had missed a dental appointment; the most cited reason was simply forgetting, followed by not being able to leave work or school. A 2026 study in Jeddah primary-care dental clinics found 76.4% of patients admitted to having missed one, and patients themselves said they preferred a reminder 24 hours before.
Reminders work. The Cochrane review of mobile phone messaging reminders, covering eight randomised trials and 6,615 participants, found attendance of 67.8% without reminders against 78.6% with text reminders, at 55 to 65% lower cost than phone calls. In Queensland's public dental service, adult attendance rose from 73.5 to 77.7 per 100 appointments after SMS reminders were introduced, across more than 55,000 appointments.
What an empty chair costs
A worked example with illustrative numbers for a three-chair clinic. Replace them with yours.
| Per month | Value | |
|---|---|---|
| Booked appointments | 400 | |
| No-shows at 12% | 48 | |
| Average value of a missed visit | AED 450 | |
| Lost to no-shows | AED 21,600 | |
| Recoverable with reminders (about a third) | 16 visits | AED 7,200 |
| Treatment-plan enquiries (implants, veneers, aligners) | 25 | |
| Lost to a faster reply (1 in 5) | 5 | |
| Would have started treatment (2 of 5), average plan AED 9,000 | 2 | AED 18,000 |
| Left on the table | About AED 25,000 per month |
The no-show line is a chair, a dentist and an assistant paid to wait. The enquiry line is worse because you never see it: the patient who went elsewhere does not write to tell you.

Start the 7-day trialWhy it keeps happening in dental clinics
- The front desk is the busiest seat in the building. Check-ins, insurance approvals, payments and the phone all come before WhatsApp, so messages are answered in batches.
- Dental questions look complicated. 'How much is an implant?' feels impossible to answer without an X-ray, so it gets a vague reply or none. The patient only wanted a starting price and a consultation slot.
- Patients write in Arabic, English, Russian, Hindi and Tagalog. The receptionist covers two of those.
- Long appointments are held on trust. A two-hour implant slot booked on a verbal yes is the most expensive no-show you can have.
- Recalls depend on someone remembering. The six-month check-up reminder is the first task dropped in a busy week.
The same Monday, before and after
| Before | After | |
|---|---|---|
| 07:10 toothache message | Read at 09:05, patient gone | Answered at 07:10, booked into the 09:15 emergency slot |
| Midnight veneer enquiry from Kuwait | Replied to at 10:40 | Starting price, consultation slots for her travel dates, photos requested |
| Two-hour implant appointment | Verbal yes | Deposit paid in the chat, slot released if unpaid |
| Tomorrow's patients | Receptionist calls if she has time | Reminder 24 hours and 1 hour before, in each patient's language |
| 'Can I take ibuprofen after an extraction?' | Answered by whoever holds the phone | Flagged to the dentist with a summary |

Why Arlay
Arlay is an AI booking agent for the WhatsApp number your clinic already has. When the father writes at 07:10, it answers at 07:10, offers the first free slot from your Google Calendar and confirms with the address and a map link. When the patient in Kuwait asks about veneers at midnight, it answers in Arabic with your starting price, explains that the dentist confirms the plan after seeing her, and books the consultation for the days she is in Dubai.
For long procedures it can hold the slot and send a payment link or Stripe checkout for a deposit, then release the slot if it is not paid. It sends reminders the day before and an hour before. Every reply is checked against the prices you configured before it is sent. Anything clinical is flagged and summarised in your inbox, where your team takes over in the same thread and hands back when done.

Start the 7-day trialFrequently asked questions
- How can a dental clinic quote prices on WhatsApp without seeing the patient?
- Quote a starting price and what it includes, say clearly that the dentist confirms the treatment plan after examination, and offer a consultation slot in the same message. Patients are not asking for a binding quote; they want to know whether you are in their range and whether you can see them.
- Do WhatsApp reminders really reduce dental no-shows?
- The evidence for text reminders is solid. A Cochrane review of eight randomised trials found attendance rose from 67.8% to 78.6% with text message reminders, and a Queensland public dental study saw adult attendance rise from 73.5 to 77.7 per 100 appointments. Gulf studies list forgetting as the top reason patients miss dental visits, which is exactly what a reminder fixes.
- Which languages can it answer in?
- Arlay answers in the language the patient writes in, including Arabic, English, Russian and Spanish, and switches if the patient switches. You can set a different tone of voice per language.
- Does it replace our receptionist?
- No. It takes the repetitive WhatsApp work, prices, availability, booking, deposits and reminders, off the front desk so your receptionist can look after the patients in front of her. Anything it should not answer is handed to your team with a summary.
